Weekly Torah Portion

It is considered a great joy to study the Torah via the portions that were set out by Ezra to read through the Cepheriym Mosheh (Five Books of Moses), also referred to as the Pentateuch. In addition to the traditional Torah portions, we have also included weekly readings from the Haftorah (Prophets) and the Besorah (Gospels). These portions are also collectively available in our publication titled Parshat; a hardcover perpetual book for annual study. Parshat: Devariym (Deuteronomy) 1:1 - 3:22

These are the words which Mosheh spoke unto all Yashar’el on this side of the Yardan in the wilderness, in the plain over against the Red Sea, between Pa’ran, and Tophel, and Lavan, and Chatseroth, and Diy Zahav. 2 (There are eleven days' journey from Chorev by the way of Mount Se`iyr unto Qadesh Barnea.) 3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Mosheh spoke unto the children of Yashar’el, according unto all that Yahuah had given him in commandment unto them; 4 After he had slain את Ciychon the king of the Emoriym, which dwelt in Cheshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, which dwelt at Ashtaroth in Edre`iy: 5 On this side of the Yardan, in the land of Mo’av, began Mosheh to declare this Torah, saying: 6 Yahuah Elohaynu spoke unto us in Chorev, saying: Ye have dwelt long enough in this mount: 7 Turn you, and take your journey, and go to the Mount of the Emoriym, and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the plain, in the hills, and in the valley, and in the Negev, and by the sea side, to the land of the Kena`aniym, and unto Lebanon, unto the great river, the river Perath. 8 Behold, I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which Yahuah swore seven oaths unto your fathers, Avraham, Yitschaq, and Ya`aqov, to give unto them and to their seed after them.

9 And I spoke unto you at that time, saying: I am not able to bear you myself alone: 10 Yahuah Elohaykem has multiplied you, and behold, ye are this day as the stars of heaven for multitude. 11 (Yahuah Elohai of your fathers make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as he has promised you!) 12 How can I myself alone bear your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife? 13 Take you wise men, and understanding, and known among your tribes, and I will make them rulers over you. 14 And ye answered me and said: The thing which you have spoken is good for us to do. 15 So I took the chief of your tribes, wise men, and known, and made them heads over you, captains over thousands, and captains over hundreds, and captains over fifties, and captains over tens, and officers among your tribes. 16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying: Hear the causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between every man and his brother, and the stranger that is with him. 17 Ye shall not respect persons in judgment; but ye shall hear the small as well as the great; ye shall not be afraid of the face of man; for the judgment is Elohiym’s: and the cause that is too hard for you, bring it unto me, and I will hear it. 18 And I commanded you at that time את all the things which ye should do.

19 And when we departed from Chorev, we went through את all that great and terrible wilderness, which ye saw by the way of the mountain of the Emoriym, as Yahuah Elohaynu commanded us; and we came to Qadesh Barnea. 20 And I said unto you: Ye are come unto the mountain of the Emoriym, which Yahuah Elohaynu gives unto us. 21 Behold, Yahuah Elohayka has set the land before you: go up and possess it, as Yahuah Elohai of your fathers has said unto you; fear not, neither be discouraged.

22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said: We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and את into what cities we shall come. 23 And the saying pleased me well: and I took twelve men of you, one of a tribe: 24 And they turned and went up into the mountain, and came unto the valley of Eshkol, and searched it out. 25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and brought it down unto us, and brought us word again, and said: It is a good land which Yahuah Elohaynu gives us. 26 Notwithstanding ye would not go up but rebelled against the commandment of Yahuah Elohayka: 27 And ye murmured in your tents, and said: Because Yahuah hated us, he has brought us forth out of the land of Mitsrayim, to deliver us into the hand of the Emoriym, to destroy us. 28 Whither shall we go up? Our brethren have discouraged our heart, saying: The people are greater and taller than we; the cities are great and walled up to heaven; and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anaqiym there. 29 Then I said unto you: Dread not, neither be afraid of them. 30 Yahuah Elohaykem which goes before you, he shall fight for you, according to all that he did for you in Mitsrayim before your eyes; 31 And in the wilderness, where you have seen how that Yahuah Elohaykem bore you, as a man bears his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came into this place. 32 Yet in this thing ye did not believe Yahuah Elohaykem, 33 Who went in the way before you, to search you out a place to pitch your tents in, in fire by night, to show you by what way ye should go, and in a cloud by day.

34 And Yahuah heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and swore seven oaths, saying: 35 Surely there shall not one of these men of this evil generation see that את good land, which I swore seven oaths to give unto your fathers, 36 Save Kalev the son of Yephunneh; he shall see it, and to him will I give the land that he has trodden upon, and to his children, because he has wholly followed Yahuah. 37 Also Yahuah was angry with me for your sakes, saying: You also shall not go in thither. 38 But Yahusha the son of Nun, which stands before you, he shall go in thither: encourage him: for he shall cause Yashar’el to inherit it. 39 Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it. 40 But as for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea. 41 Then ye answered and said unto me: We have sinned against Yahuah, we will go up and fight, according to all that Yahuah Elohaynu commanded us. And when ye had girded on every man his weapons of war, ye were ready to go up into the hill.

42 And Yahuah said unto me: Say unto them: Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten before your enemies. 43 So I spoke unto you; and ye would not hear, but rebelled against the commandment of Yahuah, and went presumptuously up into the hill. 44 And the Emoriym, which dwelt in that mountain, came out against you, and chased you, as bees do, and destroyed you in Se`iyr, even unto Chormah. 45 And ye returned and wept before Yahuah; but Yahuah would not hearken to your voice, nor give ear unto you. 46 So ye abode in Qadesh many days, according unto the days that ye abode there.

Chapter 2

Then we turned and took our journey into the wilderness by the way of the Red Sea, as Yahuah spoke unto me: and we compassed Mount Se`iyr many days. 2 And Yahuah spoke unto me, saying: 3 Ye have compassed this mountain long enough: turn you northward. 4 And command the people, saying: Ye are to pass through the coast of your brethren the children of Esau, which dwell in Se`iyr; and they shall be afraid of you: take ye good heed unto yourselves therefore: 5 Meddle not with them; for I will not give you of their land, no, not so much as a foot breadth, because I have given Mount Se`iyr unto Esau for a possession. 6 Ye shall buy meat of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy water of them for money, that ye may drink. 7 For Yahuah Elohayka has blessed you in all the works of your hand: he knows your walking through this great wilderness: these forty years Yahuah Elohayka has been with you; you have lacked nothing. 8 And when we passed by from our brethren the children of Esau, which dwelt in Se`iyr, through the way of the plain from Eylath, and from Etsyon Gever, we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Mo’av. 9 And Yahuah said unto me: Distress not the Mo’aviym, neither contend with them in battle: for I will not give you of their land for a possession, because I have given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession. 10 The Eymiym dwelt therein in times past, a people great, and many, and tall, as the Anaqiym; 11 Which also were accounted Repha’iym, as the Anaqiym; but the Mo’aviym call them Eymiym. 12 The Choriym also dwelt in Se`iyr before, but the children of Esau succeeded them, when they had destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Yashar’el did unto the land of his possession, which Yahuah gave unto them. 13 Now rise up, said I, and get you over the brook Zered. And we went over the brook Zered. 14 And the space in which we came from Qadesh Barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as Yahuah swore seven oaths unto them. 15 For indeed the hand of Yahuah was against them, to destroy them from among the host, until they were consumed.

16 So it came to pass, when all the men of war were consumed and dead from among the people, 17 That Yahuah spoke unto me, saying: 18 You are to pass over through Ar, the coast of Mo’av, this day: 19 And when you come nigh over against the children of Ammon, distress them not, nor meddle with them: for I will not give you of the land of the children of Ammon any possession; because I have given it unto the children of Lot for a possession. 20 (That also was accounted a land of Repha’iym: Repha’iym dwelt therein in old time; and the Ammoniym call them Zamzummiym; 21 A people great, and many, and tall, as the Anaqiym; but Yahuah destroyed them before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead: 22 As he did to the children of Esau, which dwelt in Se`iyr, when he destroyed the Choriym from before them; and they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day: 23 And the Avviym which dwelt in Chatseriym, even unto Gaza, the Kaphtoriym, which came forth out of Kaphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)

24 Rise ye up, take your journey, and pass over the river Arnon: behold, I have given into your hand Ciychon the Emoriy, king of Cheshbon, and his land: begin to possess it, and contend with him in battle. 25 This day will I begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you upon the nations that are under the whole heaven, who shall hear report of you, and shall tremble, and be in anguish because of you.

26 And I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Qedemoth unto Ciychon king of Cheshbon with words of peace, saying: 27 Let me pass through your land: I will go along by the highway, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the left. 28 You shall sell me meat for money, that I may eat; and give me water for money, that I may drink: only I will pass through on my feet; 29 (As the children of Esau which dwell in Se`iyr, and the Mo’aviym which dwell in Ar, did unto me;) until I shall pass over the Yardan into the land which Yahuah Elohaynu gives us. 30 But Ciychon king of Cheshbon would not let us pass by him: for Yahuah Elohayka hardened his ruach, and made his heart obstinate, that he might deliver him into your hand, as appears this day.

31 And Yahuah said unto me: Behold, I have begun to give Ciychon and his land before you: begin to possess, that you may inherit his land. 32 Then Ciychon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Yahats. 33 And Yahuah Elohaynu delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people. 34 And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain: 35 Only the cattle we took for a prey unto ourselves, and the spoil of the cities which we took. 36 From Aro`er, which is by the brink of the river of Arnon, and from the city that is by the river, even unto Gil`ad, there was not one city too strong for us: Yahuah Elohaynu delivered all unto us: 37 Only unto the land of the children of Ammon you came not, nor unto any place of the river Yabboq, nor unto the cities in the mountains, nor unto whatsoever Yahuah Elohaynu forbade us.

Chapter 3

Then we turned and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edre`iy. 2 And Yahuah said unto me: Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into your hand; and you shall do unto him as you did unto Ciychon king of the Emoriym, which dwelt at Cheshbon. 3 So Yahuah Elohaynu delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining. 4 And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argov, the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5 All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many. 6 And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Ciychon king of Cheshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city. 7 But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves. 8 And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Emoriym the land that was on this side of the Yardan, from the river of Arnon unto Mount Chermon; 9 (Which Chermon the Tsiydoniym call Shiryon; and the Emoriym call it Sheniyr;) 10 All the cities of the plain, and all Gil`ad, and all Bashan, unto Calkah and Edre`iy, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 11 For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of Repha’iym; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? Nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man. 12 And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aro`er, which is by the river Arnon, and half Mount Gil`ad, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Re’uveniym and to the Gadiym. 13 And the rest of Gil`ad, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Menashsheh; all the region of Argov, with all Bashan, which was called the land of Repha’iym. 14 Ya’iyr the son of Menashsheh took all the country of Argov unto the coasts of Geshuriy and Ma`akathiy; and called them after his own name, Bashan Chavvoth Ya`iyr, unto this day.

15 And I gave Gil`ad unto Makiyr. 16 And unto the Re’uveniym and unto the Gadiym I gave from Gil`ad even unto the river Arnon half the valley, and the border even unto the river Yabboq, which is the border of the children of Ammon; 17 The plain also, and the Yardan, and the coast thereof, from Kinneroth even unto the sea of the plain, even the Salt Sea, under Ashdoth Hap-Picgah eastward.

18 And I commanded you at that time, saying: Yahuah Elohaykem has given you this land to possess it: ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Yashar’el, all that are meet for the war. 19 But your women, and your little ones, and your cattle, (for I know that ye have many cattle,) shall abide in your cities which I have given you; 20 Until Yahuah have given rest unto your brethren, as well as unto you, and until they also possess the land which Yahuah Elohaykem has given them beyond the Yardan: and then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.

21 And I commanded Yahushua at that time, saying: Your eyes have seen את all that Yahuah Elohaykem has done unto these two kings: so shall Yahuah do unto all the kingdoms whither you pass. 22 Ye shall not fear them: for Yahuah Elohaykem he shall fight for you.

Haftorah: Yesha`yahu (Isaiah) 1:1–27

The vision of Yesha`yahu the son of Amots, which he saw concerning Yahudah and Yerushalayim in the days of Uzziyahu, Yotham, Achaz, and Yechizqiyahu, kings of Yahudah. 2 Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth: for Yahuah has spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against me. 3 The ox knows his owner, and the ass his master's crib: but Yashar’el does not know, my people do not consider. 4 Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evildoers, children that are corrupters: they have forsaken Yahuah, they have provoked the Holy One of Yashar’el unto anger, they are gone away backward.

5 Why should ye be stricken anymore? Ye will revolt more and more: the whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint. 6 From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it; but wounds, and bruises, and putrefying sores: they have not been closed, neither bound up, neither mollified with ointment. 7 Your country is desolate, your cities are burned with fire: your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by strangers. 8 And the daughter of Tsiyon is left as a cottage in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city. 9 Except Yahuah Tseva’oth had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Cedom, and we should have been like unto Amorah. 10 Hear the Word of Yahuah, ye rulers of Cedom; give ear unto the Torah of our Elohiym, ye people of Amorah. 11 To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto me? Says Yahuah: I am full of the ascending smoke offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts; and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he-goats. 12 When ye come to appear before me, who has required this at your hand, to tread my courts? 13 Bring no more an oblation of evil incense; it is an abomination unto me; No longer proclaim the New Moon and the Shabbath, and the feasts, and the festivals; they are in vain. 14 Your New Moons and your feasts are odious to my soul and are the burden I weary of lifting. 15 And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide my eyes from you: yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear: your hands are full of blood.

16 Wash yourself, make yourself clean; put away the evil of your doings from before my eyes; cease to do evil; 17 Learn to do well; seek judgment, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. 18 Come now, and let us reason together, says Yahuah: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool. 19 If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land: 20 But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword: for the mouth of Yahuah has spoken it.

21 How is the faithful city become a harlot! it was full of judgment; righteousness lodged in it; but now murderers. 22 Your silver is become dross, your wine mixed with water: 23 Your princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: everyone loves gifts, and follows after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither does the cause of the widow come unto them. 24 Therefore says Adonai, Yahuah Tseva’oth, the Mighty One of Yashar’el: Ah, I will ease me of my adversaries, and avenge me of my enemies:

25 And I will turn my hand upon you, and purely purge away your dross, and take away all your tin: 26 And I will restore your judges as at the first, and your counselors as at the beginning: afterward you shall be called: The city of righteousness, the faithful city. 27 Tsiyon shall be redeemed with judgment, and her converts with righteousness.

Besorah: Marqus (Mark) 14:1-16

After two days was the Feast of the Pecach, and of Matstsah: and the chief priests and the scribes sought how they might take him by craft and put him to death. 2 But they said: Not on the feast day, lest there be an uproar of the people.

3 And being in Bethany in the house of Shim`on the jar maker, as he sat to eat, there came a woman having an alabaster box of ointment of spikenard very precious; and she broke the box and poured it on his head. 4 And there were some that had indignation within themselves, and said: Why was this waste of the ointment made? 5 For it might have been sold for more than three hundred pence and have been given to the poor. And they murmured against her. 6 And Yahusha said: Let her alone; why trouble ye her? She has wrought a good work on me. 7 For ye have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will ye may do them good: but me ye have not always. 8 את She has done what she could: she is come aforehand to anoint my body to the burying. 9 Amein I say unto you: Wheresoever this Besorah shall be preached throughout the whole world, this also that she has done shall be spoken of for a memorial of her.

10 And Yahudah Iyshqiryot, one of the twelve, went unto the chief priests, to betray him unto them. 11 And when they heard it, they were glad, and promised to give him money. And he sought how he might conveniently betray him.

12 And at the beginning of the daylight hours of the Pecach week, when they killed the Pecach, his Talmidiym said to him, where will you that we should go to prepare that we may eat the Pecach? 13 And he sent forth two of his Talmidiym and said unto them: Go ye into the city, and there shall meet you a man bearing a pitcher of water: follow him. 14 And wheresoever he shall go in, say ye to the goodman of the house: The Rabbi says: Where is the guest chamber, where I shall eat the Pecach with my Talmidiym? 15 And he will show you a large upper room furnished and prepared: there make ready for us. 16 And his Talmidiym went forth, and came into the city, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the Pecach.
