Bereshiyth (Genesis) 4:26

There is a discussion that the verse found below is inaccurately set forth in the Eth CEPHER:

Bereshiyth (Genesis) 4:26

And to Sheth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh: then began men to call upon the name of YAHUAH.

The discussion is that the last clause should read: then men began to profane the name of YAHUAH.

So, given this objection, we must carefully consider anew this passage. Our discussion must begin with a conclusion as to the applicable hermeneutic to be applied in the translation.

In publishing the Eth Cepher, we made decisions early on as to our reliance upon the Hebrew text for the foundation of the writings in the so-called Old Testament.  The Hebrew writings found in the Pentateuch are particularly reliable, as the Torah scrolls which have been created by the scribes over the centuries have been crafted with substantial care; it is not uncommon for such scribes to spend four hours or more on the marking of a single letter, and even one error causes the entire scroll to be burned.

There is an historical record which also corroborates the veracity of the Hebrew text in regard to the Torah, which is the writing found at Qumran known as the Dead Sea Scrolls.  These scrolls have been determined to have been created in the second and first centuries B.C., and in regard to the Torah, are letter-for-letter identical.

Therefore, to claim that one word appears which is distinctly different to the long-established text is an unusual claim.  The discrepancy claimed here is that חָלַל chalal (Strong's 2490) should be the word used here (which translates in one instance as profane), instead of the word קָרָא qara' (Strong's 7121), which is what consistently appears in the Hebrew and is translated as to call.

Our first premise in transliteration is to reject the notion of modifying the text to accommodate that which we believe makes sense.  There may be a certain flexibility in the underlying Hebrew, but the difference between chalal and qara is dramatic.

One problem that is sometimes seen even in a flawless Torah scroll is a misread, where the vav (ו) is sometimes confused with nun safit (ן), which appears nearly identical except one is a bit longer than the other. There are other confusing aspects of Hebrew, where the dalet (ד) can be misread as the resh (ר), or the dalet (ד) is confused with kaf safit (ך). None of those issues are present in this case.  Here is the passage in the Hebrew:

ולשׁת (v’la’sheth) גם (gam) הוא (hu) ילד (yalad) בן  (ben)   ויקרא  (v’qara)  את  (eth) שׁמו (shemi) אנושׁ (Enosh) אז (az)  הוחל (h’v’chol) לקרא  (l’qara) בשׁם (b’shem)  יהוה׃ (YAHUAH)

And Sheth also to him [was] born a son and [he] called his name Enosh, at that time and the (profane/common/unholy) called on the name of YAHUAH.

We have arrived at the confusion in this phrase.  This word - הוחל (h’v’chol) – has been construed by Strong’s as the word חלל (châlal).  There is not a significant difference in meaning, however, there is a large difference in context.  Before we look at the words, consider the prefixes to the word.  In this context, we have two prefixes: heh, which means the, and vay, which means and.

The word חֹל chol (Strong's 2455) means exposed; hence, profane, common, or unholy.

However, the word חלל châlal (Strong’s 2490) means to bore, that is, (by implication) to wound, to dissolve; figuratively to profane, to break one’s word, to defile, to pollute, to stain or wound.

The word which actually appears in the text is h’v’chol, not chalal.  The word is therefore used as a noun, and not a verb, because the verb in the phrase is qaraThe word קָרָא qara' (Strong’s 7121) means to call out, to address by name, to call, to pronounce, to publish, to read, to proclaim, or to say.

Here we meet a proposition where the rubber meets the road so to speak.  There is a dogma (and I believe that is the correct word) which claims that the pronunciation of the sacred name is anathema to the faith (the ineffable name doctrine).  In modern Judaism, it is totally unacceptable, and even warrants death, to speak the name.  Equally, in Christianity, the sacred name is disguised as Lord; yet we are instructed to call upon the name.

Divrei Hayamiym (1 Chronicles) 16:8

Give thanks unto YAHUAH, call (qara) upon his name, make known his deeds among the people.

Tehilliym (Psalm) 105:1

O give thanks (yada) unto YAHUAH; call (qara) upon his name (shem): make known (yada) his deeds among the people (am). 2 Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works. 3 Glory ye in his holy name: let the heart of them rejoice that seek YAHUAH. 4 Seek YAHUAH, and his strength: seek his face evermore. 5 Remember his marvellous works that he has done; his wonders, and the judgments of his mouth; 6 O ye seed of Avraham his servant, ye children of Ya`aqov his chosen. 7 He is YAHUAH our ELOHIYM: his judgments are in all the earth.

Tehilliym (Psalm) 116:10-19

I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted: 11 I said in my haste, All men are liars. 12 What shall I render unto YAHUAH for all his benefits toward me? 13 I will take the cup of YAHUSHA, and call (qara) upon the name (shem) of YAHUAH. 14 I will pay my vows unto YAHUAH now in the presence of all his people. 15 Precious in the sight of YAHUAH is the death of his Qodeshiym. 16 O YAHUAH, truly I am your servant; I am your servant, and the son of your handmaid: you have loosed my bonds. 17 I will offer to you the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and will call (qara) upon the name (shem) of YAHUAH. 18 I will pay my vows unto YAHUAH now in the presence of all his people, 19 In the courts of YAHUAH’S house, in the midst of you, O Yerushalayim.  HALLELUYAH.

Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 12:1-6

And in that day you shall say, O YAHUAH, I will praise you: though you were angry with me, your anger is turned away, and you comforted me. 2 Behold, EL is my YAHUSHA; I will trust, and not be afraid: for YAH YAHUAH is my strength and my song; he also is become my YAHUSHA. 3 Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of YAHUSHA. 4 And in that day shall ye say, Praise (yada) YAHUAH, call (qara) upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. 5 Sing unto YAHUAH; for he has done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. 6 Cry out and shout, you inhabitant of Tsiyon: for great is the Holy One of Yisra’el in the midst of you.

Yeshayahu (Isaiah) 48:1-2

Hear ye this, O house of Ya`aqov, which are called (qara) by the name of Yisra’el, and are come forth out of the waters of Yahudah, which swear by the name of YAHUAH, and make mention (zakar) of the ELOHIYM of Yisra’el, but not in truth, nor in righteousness. 2 For they call themselves of the holy city, and stay themselves upon the ELOHIYM of Yisra’el; YAHUAH TSEVA’OT is his name.

Yo’el (Joel) 2:28

And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my RUACH upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: 29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my RUACH. 30 And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. 31 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of YAHUAH come. 32 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call (qara) on the name of YAHUAH shall be delivered: for in Mount Tsiyon and in Yerushalayim shall be deliverance, as YAHUAH has said, and in the remnant whom YAHUAH shall call.

Ma’asiym (Acts) 2:17-21

17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, says ELOHIYM, I will pour out of my RUACH upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: 18 And on my servants and on my handmaidens I will pour out in those days of my RUACH; and they shall prophesy: 19 And I will show wonders in heaven above, and signs in the earth beneath; blood, and fire, and vapour of smoke: 20 The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before that great and notable day of YAHUAH come: 21 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of YAHUAH shall be saved.

Tsephanyahu (Zephaniah) 3:8-9

Therefore wait ye upon me, says YAHUAH, until the day that I rise up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may assemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them my indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth shall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy. 9 For then will I turn to the people a pure language, that they may all call upon (qara) the name of YAHUAH, to serve him with one (echad) consent (shekem, or yoke).

Romayim (Romans) 10:10-17

For with the heart man believes unto holiness; and with the mouth confession is made unto YAHUSHA. 11 For the Scripture says, Whosoever believes on him shall not be ashamed. 12 For there is no difference between the Yahudiy and the Yavaniy: for the same YAHUAH over all is rich unto all that call upon him. 13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of YAHUAH shall be saved. 14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? 15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the Besorah of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! 16 But they have not all obeyed the Besorah. For Yesha`yahu says, YAHUAH, who has believed our report? 17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of ELOHIYM.

The ineffable name doctrine is completely vitiated with the words of Sha’ul (Paul) here. Let us link the concepts:

For whosoever shall call upon the name of YAHUAH shall be saved. How then shall they call on him . . . of whom they have not heard?

Mishlei (Proverbs) 30:4

Who has ascended up into heaven, or descended? who has gathered the wind in his fists? who has bound the waters in a garment? who has established all the ends of the earth? what is His name, and what is His Son's name, if you can tell?

Strong's Concordance makes a case for the Sacred Names
